Their teeth can crush bones! Well, actually, I read that their jaws crush bone, but I guess the teeth must be strong to do that. Grizzly bears.
The teeth of the dog, and the teeth of the crocodile, and the teeth of the… I remember that first term at dental school so well. Oh, and the anteater is the only mammal that has NO teeth. We wanted to get on with drilling teeth, crowning teeth, and so on, but for some weeks, we heard only about animal teeth. And no-one told us about the grizzly bear crushing bone.
We have recently returned from watching grizzly bears in the wild in British Columbia. We stayed on a floating lodge in a creek, and went out in small boats each day. They are huge creatures, and though they lumber along when running, they can move at a fast pace. And crush bones.
And yet – they look quite cuddly. Most bears do. I suppose that is why teddy bears are popular toys. But beware – they can be aggressive, have large strong claws, and kill and eat other animals as a lifestyle.
Which made me think about things the Bible tells us about Satan. He can appear quite attractive to people, and can even seem to be an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). We also read of the ‘pleasures of sin’, though they only last for a season (Hebrews 11:25). Play with a bear, and it will kill you. Likewise to those who dabble with Satan and his world. Yet those who have trusted in Jesus are quite safe, eternally, from the damage that Satan does to so many people in this world. Rather like Wendy and me being on a platform behind a locked metal gate, from where we gazed out at the bears in safety.
