I love snow! When there is even a suggestion that we might see a little, I get excited, and have been known to get up during the night especially to look for it out of the window… usually to be disappointed.
It it always comes at the wrong time. These days, anyway, though many years ago was usually ‘the right time’. We always enjoyed snow when the children came to stay at, or near, Christmas. They too love snow, and its arrival at such times confirmed for me Who controls the weather. It was a great family fun time, with even Dad tobogganing and snow-balling!
I used to go to the Lake District every January or February simply to walk in the snow (and the hotels are cheaper then). Now it’s usually sunshine – or rain.
The snow this week excited me, though it really messed up our Full Gospel dinner. 35 booked in and 13 came.
I think they must get snow in Israel because it is mentioned in the Bible. Did you know that? There are 25 Bible verses that mention snow, many of them in Job and Psalms.
Job 37:6 reads, ‘For to the snow He says, “Fall on the earth…”‘. So again we see Who controls the weather!
Isaiah 1:18. ‘Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow’.
Isaiah 55:10,11. ‘As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me and empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it’.
I learn a few things from these verses that mention snow. God is sovereign – no-one else can command the weather. Only the Lord can make us clean and make us fit for eternity. Finally, we need to take heed to the word of God, because it is powerful and accomplishes God’s will.
I love the snow.
